Welcoming a Rescue Rabbit to Your Home

The decision to adopt a rescue animal is a hugely rewarding one.  Its not jut cats and dogs that become in need of new homes.  There are many rabbits across the UK looking for loving owners.  Before you take the plunge however here are some tips for helping your pet rabbit to settle in.

Any rescue pet should be viewed in a similar light to that of foster children.  They will have formed attachments and associations with a previous owner.  Their response to a breakdown in a relationship is the same as in humans – they are left with a deep sense of insecurity.  So you need to be patient and remember just how nervous and unsure your new arrival is.

As soon as you get home put your new rabbit in a clean, pre-prepared rabbit hutch.  Make sure there is plenty of water and a bowl of dried food.  Once your rabbit has settled in to his new hutch for a day you can open up his kingdom to the grazing frame on the lawn.  If you don’t have this then offer freshly harvested hay or grass.  Do not give your rabbit fresh vegetables straight away as this can lead to loose stools.  Try putting an upturned cardboard box in the hutch or grazing frame so they have a refuge to hide in.
