Training Your Kitten

Posted by: Terry  :  Category: Cats

Cats are notoriously difficult to train however it is possible to discourage any anti-social behaviour and to get them used to a set routine as kittens.  The first thing you need to do is to handle you kitten as much as possible.  Touch their ears, mouth, teeth and comb or brush their coat to get them used to contact.

Although cats can happily live as housecats most people like to allow their cat access to outdoors.  If this is the case a cat flap is a great purchase.  You’ll be able to start training your kitten to use a cat flap from about 4 months.  Get a cat flap that is clear so that they can survey the outdoors before they venture out.  When training try and enlist a friend or family member to help and pass the kitten through the cat flap several times until it starts to get the idea.

If your kitten is very adventurous and into climbing curtains or has developed a nasty habit of using flower pots as toilets a water spray can come in handy for deterring bad behaviour.

Your kitten will master the litter tray quickly as they are very clean creatures.  Get them used to the ray as early as you can.  Make sure you use cat litter and always keep it clean otherwise your kitten may look for other places to do its business.  If the kitten is reluctant to use it check the location – it may be too close to his food or I a gangway where he feels exposed.
