Toilet Training Your Puppy
In an ideal world when you pick up your new puppy he’ll be paper trained, however no matter how well trained he was by the breeder he’s likely to have a relapse when you get him home. All the new sights and sounds of your home will frighten and confuse him. He’ll have been separated from his mum and the rest of the litter for the first time and he’ll be coping with meeting lots of new people and, possibly, your other pets. It can be all too much for the little one and before you know it there a puddle on the floor!
Be prepared and put down plenty of newspaper. Puppies have small bladders and the muscles won’t have developed yet so when he wants to go it’ll be pretty immediate. Make sure you put most of the paper down near the back door. This signals to your puppy that this is the best place to go.
If you notice him sniffing and circling it time to pick him up and put him on the paper. If he has an accident, don’t be tempted to scold him or rub his nose in it. If you weren’t quick enough to catch him in the act he won’t know why you’re angry with him. Just keep your eyes peeled and the more he keeps getting directed to the paper the quicker he’ll catch on.
Once he’s got the knack and if he’s had all his injections you can then start to encourage him to go outside. Start to slowly remove the paper leaving the paper nearest the door until last.
You will need to be patient and remember when training dogs its often one step forward two steps back. Just be observant and consistent. They’ll very quickly cotton on to going outdoors. After all there is so much to explore out there!
