The Healing Power of Dog Walking
I was just today chatting to a friend about dog walking and the powerful effects it can have not only on your physical health but your mental health also. My friend’s mother has been very ill and her father has been caring for her throughout. To give her dad some respite my friend will go over and stay with her mum while her dad takes their dog for a walk. She says he go rambling with the dog for about an hour and comes back refreshed and rejuvenated.
It is a fact that having a dog and walking that dog regularly provides many people with the time to not only get some important exercise but the shed the cares and worries of the day. I find that taking the dog for a thirty to forty minute walk in the morning can energise me for the days ahead, clearing away the sleep and leaving me alert to tackle the tasks of the day. In the evening or at the weekend a walk can give me space to contemplate things that have happened in the day and allow me to unwind and relax into the evening. This is even more effective in the summer months when I can really appreciate and enjoy the countryside around me. You notice the change in the seasons and the tides of nature moving around us – something that you can miss in the day-to-day hurly burly. It is said that walking out in the countryside with your dog can be just as healing as meditating and I would certainly agree.
