The Dreaded Trip to the Vets
There’s no way round it. You’re very unlikely to get a pet that actually enjoys going to the vets. Most animals will soon cotton on to the signs that you are about to whisk them away to their least favourite place. If you find that you feel a little tense when you go your pet will pick up on that too.
The key is to keep very calm and easy going. My basset hound had a particularly strong aversion to the vets, so much so he would growl and bear his teeth when John the vet tried to get anywhere close. After much debate we decided the best option would be to sedate Harvey and muzzle him. However we didn’t want this to make the visit even more unpleasant. So we dipped the muzzle in cream cheese and got Harvey to view the muzzle as a means of getting treats rather than the prelude to a traumatic visit.
Armed with chunks of cheese I would painstakingly lure him into the treatment room. Once he had had his treatment I would remove the muzzle and give him some cheese whilst still in the room, John would do the same. Slowly but surely he has stopped viewing the vets as a scary experience but something that can be pleasant too.
