The Benefits of Microchipping

Posted by: Terry  :  Category: Cats, Dogs

It has long been accepted that microchipping your dog or cat is one of the best ways of ensuring your pet is permanently identifiable.  It is inexpensive and is of benefit as it cannot be lost as a tag can be on a collar.

Ensure you still use a tag on a collar anyway but stay vigilant as they do fall off.

If your dog or cat strays you have a high chance of your pet being returned with a microchip.  Most rescue centres and vets scan abandoned or roaming pets and the police will also scan pets as standard who have been retrieved when stolen from their owners.  The Cat’s Protection for example microchip all their cats and kittens before they are re-homed as they believe it to be so effective in reuniting lost and stolen pets with their distraught owners.

The chip itself is a tiny piece of metal contained in a case made of surgical glass.  It is approximately the size of a grain of rice.  The glass will not corrode and will not harm your pet.  It holds details of the microchip number and will match the details to the owners name and address when scanned.
