Teaching Kids How to Deal with Dogs

Posted by: Terry  :  Category: Dogs

The best time to start teaching children about how to handle dogs safely is when they are very young.  Make sure you reinforce this often as the child grows up so that they remain safe.  Here are the do’s and don’ts you need to instil in your children:

  • Do not run up to a dog
  • Do not try to touch your next door neighbour’s dog through the fence
  • Do not attempt to touch a growling dog or one that is bearing its teeth or a dog that is barking hysterically
  • Never approach a dog without a grown up being there
  • When getting to know a dog always reach out your hand first and let the dog sniff it
  • Do not grab a dog
  • If a dog is a watchdog protecting property never approach it
  • Do not attempt to touch a dog when he is eating or has possession of a treat or bone of any kind
  • Do not pull the dog’s tail or fur as this will hurt it
  • If you see a dog on a lead ask the owner first if you can pet it
  • Always keep your face out of reach of the dog when playing with or petting it
  • Do not make sudden movements or loud noises when approaching a dog.  Always speak softly to the dog.
  • If you are being chased by a dog stop running.  Running will encourage the dog to chase after you.
  • If a dog is aggressive do not make eye contact with it and back away in a non-threatening way.
  • Do not attempt to touch a dog’s eyes
