Take Responsibility for Your Dog Mess

There is a growing campaign against dog owners who systematically allow their dogs to foul public areas such as parks, country lanes and pavements and rightly so.  It amazes me that people think it’s perfectly justified to leave dog muck littered around these days.  We all know the dangers of toxoplasmosis and other bacteria that is carried in dog faeces.  If you don’t it can be dangerous for pregnant women, small children and some bacteria can cause blindness.  In areas where children play it is imperative that you keep it clear of dog mess.

Park wardens are really coming down hard on offenders with heavy fines.  Unfortunately you have to catch the culprits in the act and this can be a tricky business.  If you visit a local area that is not fitted out with dog bins get in touch with your local authority.  There’s nothing worse than having to carry around a steaming bag of dog mess and councils have a responsibility to make it easier for dog owners to keep public areas clean.

When going out on a walk take with you plenty of plastic bags.  You can special doggie bags which are scented but I’ve found nappy bags are just as good and far cheaper.  Take a pack of tissues and if you really want to protect yourself take a plastic disposable glove to protect your hands.  A small bottle of bacterial hand gel is also a good idea.   If there are no bins in the area don’t be tempted to leave the bag to one side with the intention of picking it up on the way back.  Its easily forgotten.  Just grin and bear it until you find a bin!
