Syrian Hamsters & Cages
The Syrian hamster is a lovely family pet, being both easy to care for and with regular attention they can become tame very quickly. Hamsters are great pets for both children and adults alike but they are nocturnal creatures sleeping most of the day so I wouldn’t recommend you keeping them in a bedroom. On average they live up to 2.5 years.
They are quite solitary and won’t appreciate another hamster companion. Another hamster will bring out their territorial streak and they will fight ferociously. If you do want to keep more than one hamster think about dwarf hamsters, gerbils or rats instead. These creatures live happily in colonies and will appreciate company.
You’ll need a large cage as these hamsters like a lot of exercise. Choose one with a plastic bottom and wire top as wire sides will allow your intrepid hamster to climb around – a favourite hamster pastime! However it you have a cat choose a cage with a plastic top too to give your hamster added protection. As a rule keep your cat and hamster separated in different rooms. A cat’s natural instinct will be to worry the hamster and try to attack it.
Multilevel cages are great and you can also buy many modular cages that have add on tubes and rooms to keep your hamster entertained.
