Stress in Cats Can Cause Bladder Infections

Cystitis and other bladder infections are very common in cats.  Usually however it is not down to a simple infection but the effects of stress.  It is unclear why cats are susceptible to stress in this area of their bodies.

Cats have evolved to live with us from being natural predators and although in the main they settle in with little problems there can be situations that are stressful to your cat.  Cats can get particularly stressed when sharing the household with other people and pets.  In particular a cat will be come stressed if they are sharing with other cats that are not related to them in any way.  This is apparent when they are forced to share eating and litter tray areas – both areas that are of significant importance to a feline.  The stress can then lead to physical symptoms such as cystitis.

Stress seems to have a significant effect on the bladder making it more sensitive to inflammation and pain.  Symptoms include frequent urination, blood in the urine, painful or scanty urination.  If you notice any of these symptoms take your cat to the vets immediately as a blockage in the bladder can very rapidly lead to death.

If you think your cat could be stressed then look for reasons that may have caused this situation and take steps to alleviate it.
