Settling In a Rescue Dog
It can be very rewarding to give a home to a rescue dog. When settling a rescue dog in the general advice is to view them in the same light you would a foster child. They often have formed certain associations and attachments with a previous owner and are likely to feel insecure as a result. It is perfectly understandable that your new dog is unsure and nervous in his new home initially.
Give him a quiet enclosed space in the house to come round in first. You can leave him in his carrier for a while so he can take in all the new smells and sounds in a secure place. Open the carrier then but let him make the choice to leave it. Eventually he’ll venture out.
Don’t crowd him but be there if he needs reassurance. Some dogs will bound about playfully whilst others will want to stay in the safety and comfort of their safe space initially. Just leave him to take his time and make his move.
You’ll need about three months for your dog to settle. To help them create their own dog zone. This can be down by partitioning off a room for example the kitchen with a baby gate.
