Settling a Dog into a New Home
Whether you’re bringing a puppy home for the first time or moving house with your existing dog it can be a traumatic experience for the animal and you need to act sensitively to ensure they settle in quickly. Animals are not great fans of change and for a dog much is based around scent. When you move home or when a puppy leaves its litter there will a mass of new and strange scents. Sights and sounds will be different and may unnerve them too.
Try to bring something with the old scent of their previous home. A blanket or toy is a good choice and will make your pet feel more secure. Speak to the breeder about bringing something from the litter if you have a new puppy.
Accept that the dog may not sleep initially. If you can put the dogs bed outside your bedroom door with a baby gate across the doorway so they can see you and won’t feel alarmed. Gradually you can then move them to where you’d like them to sleep.
Expect accidents and don’t shout. If your dog is particularly unsettled a pheromone plug-in can work wonders.
