Rat Proofing

Once you pet rat has got accustomed to being handled by you, take time to rat proof your home so that you can allow your rat to roam in the house.  You don’t need to redesign the house but a little thought and consideration will make sure you can keep tabs on your intrepid explorer and keep him safe from harm.

Rat’s like to scent their territory with droppings and urine so put a throw over any soft furnishings like the sofa.  Cover electrical cables with aquarium tubing.  You can get this from most pet shops quite cheaply or feed it through hose pipe.  Rats are also partial to nibbling on your books, clothes, stationery and any other items that take their fancy!  They are also masters at knocking things off window ledges and shelves.  Make sure you keep all your valuable possessions out of harms ways and breakables well out of reach of adventuring rats.

Keep your rat sectioned off in one room and make sure the door and any windows are closed.  Once a rat has made it outside you’ll struggle to find him.  Have a good check of the room to make sure there are no possible alternative escape routes.  Rats are very adept at squeezing through small holes and crevices so check along your skirting boards for cracks  and between wooden floorboards.

Don’t wear shoes when your rat is roaming to avoid any accidents of the treading nature and make sure plants are out of reach as many are poisonous to your pet.  Rats also enjoy digging in plant pots and climbing plants so this is another good reason to remove any foliage.
