Puppy Trafficking in Wales

A recent report by the RSPCA has highlighted that it estimates that approximately 1000 puppies are being imported into Wales every week.  Many have already been exposed to infectious diseases and are likely to become ill within a couple of weeks of being homed.

Mark Evans, the chief vetinary advisor at the RSPCA advised:

“Puppy trafficking is a despicable, profit-driven business.  We want the dog-loving public to destroy the puppy trafficker’s market. If you’re planning to buy a puppy, do your homework.  Question everything and make absolutely sure the puppy you buy has come from a loving, caring home. Let common sense prevail and if something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t, so walk away.  The RSPCA believes that many are likely to have been exposed to disease and may become seriously ill, or even die, within days or weeks of entering their new home.”

Make sure when you are buying a puppy that you make sure that the dog seems happy and vital.  This applies wherever you buy a puppy from.  Puppies should always be lively and curious about you and the world in general.  Within a few days of buying the dog make sure you book a visit at the vets to get the dog checked out.  This can be an ideal time to get them vaccinated against disease also.
