Puppy Checklist
When your preparing for the arrival of a new puppy it is best to get essential items before your new pet arrives. It can seem a daunting task thinking of food items, treats for training and rewarding, looking into finding a vet and arranging vaccinations. If you are prepared in advance your puppy will settle into the routine of your family much more easily. Here’s a comprehensive checklist to help you through:
Puppy food – speak to your vet if you are unsure as to which puppy food to choose. If you are swapping the puppy over from the food the dog breeder has suggested take a few days to mix the new food in with the old food to prevent tummy upsets.
Treats – try to use healthy low calorie treats such as dried liver. These treats are much healthier than some of the treats out there on the market and are much tastier.
Teething Chews – there are plenty of chew toys available. Choose one from a reputable store that is safe for puppies. Alternatively buy rawhide or pigs ears as again these help your puppy to teeth and are just as good as dental treats for cleaning teeth.
Flea and Worming tablets – I’d recommend getting these from your vet rather than buying some of the high street products as your vet can give you medication suited to the puppy and its weight.
Dog bed – you’ll need a basket or cage for you puppy to sleep in that is out of the way of draughts and is in a quiet area of the house. Dogs like to have a safe retreat and it will help your puppy to feel more secure it his new environment
Toys – toys are great for distracting your puppy from chewing your belongings and playing games such as fetch will teach your dog how to interact with you and build a strong bond.
Puppy pads – you may prefer to use newspaper but puppy pads are much more absorbent and reduce the danger of urine scents being left on the floor.
Collar and Lead – choose an adjustable collar as your puppy will grow rapidly
Shampoo and brush – how often you need to groom your puppy depends on the breed but even short haired dogs will benefit from regular brushing. It gets them used to be handled and further builds a bond between you and your pet.
Food and water bowl – depending on the size of your puppy there will be bowls available to suit
Other items you may consider are a kennel, car restraints and chewing repellent.
