In the hot summer months you need to be extra vigilant about your dogs welfare.  As the temperatures sore your canine friend can really start to feel the heat and suffer as a consequence.  It can be a dangerous season for your dog if you aren’t careful enough to take steps to protect your pet from the heat.

Here are some top tips for protecting you dog from the summer sun:

The sun is at its hottest between 11.00am and 3.00pm so don’t take your dog for a walk between these times.  In general try to get your dog out for a walk early in the morning or late at night when temperatures are much more tolerable for your dog.

Bear in mind that even if there is a cool wind if the sun is strong your dog will feel the heat.  Being close to the ground they will soon heat up if the ground is hot.

Invest in some doggie boots.  These will protect your dog’s feet from the hot surface of pavements and driveways.

Dehydration is a killer so always carry water with you.  If your dog is panting he’s hot so make sure you have fresh water with you at all times.  There are special dog water bottles available with handy fold out bowls so your dog can have a pit stop if he gets too thirsty.

Dogs cool down from the feet up so a good way to cool them down is to spray water around their feet and legs.  They’ll really enjoy a wet towel on the floor or a kiddie’s pool to take a dip in on hot sunny days.
