Positioning Your Fish Tank
When you get your first fish tank you need to think carefully about where you are going to put it. Fish are timid creatures and can easily get stressed and therefore ill. Most fish illnesses are brought on by stress which is due to their environment.
Choose a position that is relatively quiet. A fish tank in a main gangway is a no no. The noise of passers-by will startle the fish and cause the stress. If you have children consider and area that isn’t easily accessible to them. Children don’t always understand that they need to be quiet and gentle around the tank. When children do have access to the tank teach them not to bang on the side of the fish tank as this will upset the inhabitants.
You also need to be aware of any other pets you have. Cats will find a fish tank irresistible! When my pet cat and I stayed at my parents for a while my dad couldn’t work out why the fish had taken to hiding behind the plants and rocks. They just wouldn’t come out. A few days later I came across Tikka, my ginger tom, banging with his ginger paw menacingly against the side of the tank ! The mystery was solved!
You also need to consider draughts and direct sunlight. Keep the tank out of draughts and away from the sun.
