Pets and Working from Home

Lately I’ve come across a few friends and acquaintances that have recently got all romantic and giddy about the idea of having a dog as they now work from home.  They look at my Shih Tzu, Tashi, and my Basset Hound, Harvey, all misty eyed and sigh longingly.  ‘It would be so perfect!’ they declare, ‘I can take them out for a walk at lunch and after I’ve finished working.  It’ll get me out of the house and I’ll be there to keep them company!’

It does seem to be a perfect situation.  Many dogs have to spend long stints on their own as their owners work so having a dog when you work from home can seem like an ideal opportunity.

However, a word of caution!  You still have to work and a dog will not understand that you now need some quiet time.  Dogs want to be with you every minute of the day.  They have no concept of deadlines or that you need peace and quiet to concentrate.  If you get yourself a puppy you need to be aware that you will need to be on hand constantly to look out for your dog needing the toilet and to just generally keep them out of mischief.  It can be terribly distracting and I know of one friend who spent the first few months of dog ownership running round in a delirious stressed haze as he tried to juggle design contracts with toilet training, dog walking and trying to curb his pups habit of chewing the skirting boards!
