One Plain Biscuit is Equivalent to a Hamburger for Your Dog

We are becoming and increasingly portly nation and this now includes our pets with fifty per cent being obese.  It can cause more harm than simply making your pet puff a little when it exercises.  There are a plethora of obesity related illnesses that can plague your pet from low energy to heart disease to osteoarthritis to diabetes.

For a cat putting on just 1 kg is the equivalent to a woman putting on 16kg so you can see how quickly things can get out of hand.

Most owners treat their pets to show them love and affection but this is sorely misplaced.  Only a lifestyle with a balanced nutritious diet and the appropriate amount of exercise will suit your pet and ensure a happy and healthy life.

When you next go to get a health check for your pet the vet will weigh them.  If they are overweight they will discuss with you the type of diet you feed your pet on.  Treats need not be unhealthy but often people just don’t realise how many calories are in some of the popular brands.  A small plain biscuit type treat is the equivalent of a human eating a hamburger!  Now if you’re feeding one treat a day this is concerning but many people will feed their dogs much more.  In addition to this many owners feed their pets human food and scraps which all go towards adding on unnecessary calories.

Seek advice from your vet if you suspect your pet is overweight and discuss how you can start to bring the problem under control.
