One Hundred St Bernard Dogs Abandoned
The RSPCA deal with many cases of neglect but the one that has stood out for me most this month is the mystery of the St Bernard breeder. The RSPCA, the famous animal welfare charity, successfully retrieved not one, not two, not even twenty but a staggering one hundred St Bernard dogs, The stud dogs and bitches were found at a kennels situated in Northants and the alarm went up after their breeder-owner disappeared.
When the RSPCA arrived they could tell that the dogs had been abandoned for some days without any access to water or food to the extent that some of the St Bernards had died of malnutrition. A spokesperson for the RSPCA, Justin Studds, said:
‘There was faeces everywhere and upturned bowls. Something has gone wrong. Because they are such big dogs you wouldn’t expect to see so many dogs in such conditions. I’ll be going home and having a stiff drink tonight. But it looks like we can do something with them.’
Concerns have been raised for the well being of the fifty year old breeder-owner whose whereabouts are still not known. Mrs Collis is well respected in the breeding community and the Kennel Club are deeply concerned about her disappearance.
