Older Guineas

If you’re looking for a guinea pig then begin your search at a rescue centre rather than a pet store.  There are many litters of guinea pigs abandoned each year although you may not instantly associate rescue centres with this type of pet.  Your local centre will have plenty of guineas for you to view and as with most creatures no doubt you’ll be charmed by the little babies in the litter.  But take time to consider an older guinea pig before automatically choosing a baby.  There are advantages.

An older guinea pig has already developed its nature.  Now you may consider this to be a bad thing but with a baby their nature is determined by how their mother has treated them, their experiences in their environment so far and how you then treat them.  A quiet gentle guinea pig at the centre may turn out to be boss pig when you take him home.  With an older guinea pig the centre can let you know what his personality is like and you can then take step to improve it if needed.  A bossy guinea can be soothed into a gentler pig, a timid guinea can be encouraged into being more outgoing and a shy guinea can be gently brought out of its shell.
