Looking After Your Neighbours Pets

I’m currently looking after my neighbour’s pet rabbit and guinea pig while they go on holiday for a week.  It occurred to me as my neighbour handed over the food and gave me vague instructions on how to care for them what a huge responsibility it is taking on board the care of some one else’s beloved pet.  I felt the urge to stick post it note all around the house to remind me of my daily duty should I for one terrible moment forget!

Here are some tips for making sure you are fully prepared to take on the care of a friend or neighbours pet:

Make sure your friend or neighbour gives you information on feeding, watering and general daily care needs.  Ask then to make a list and check that the animals don’t require to have any medication administered.

If you are taking care of an animal that requires exercise make sure that you have time in your daily routine before you commit to the task.

Take a note of the name and contact details of the pet’s vet in case of emergency and also take a note of how you will be able to reach your neighbour or friend if your need to.

If you are caring for an animal that you have little knowledge or experience of check out the internet to get a few guidelines.

If you are looking after a cat or dog make sure you give then some attention time either to play or stroke them as they will be missing their owners.
