Litter Training Rabbits

Rabbits are very clean creatures on the whole but you will need to give them a little training on using their litter tray if you keep your rabbit indoors.  Choose the size of the litter tray according to the size of your rabbit.  You’ll need on with low sides for a little or baby rabbit and you’ll need at least one.  However, if you can, get a couple of trays.  The more opportunities you give your rabbit to use the tray the more likely they are to succeed.

Have the litter trays ready in position for when you bring your rabbit home.  As a minimum have one next to their hutch or bedding and one in another corner of the room.  Drop a couple of rabbit pellets and some urine soaked tissue in the tray so the rabbit can scent that the tray is his toilet.  Make sure they know where they are and if the rabbit jumps in make sure they get lots of fuss.

Rabbits are more likely to use litter trays if they are attractive to them so try putting some of the favourite nibble in one corner of the tray.  Try out different types of litter until you find one your rabbit likes.  Rabbits like rolling and digging in their litter trays and may even sleep there.  This should be allowed and encouraged as the more they like their litter tray the more like they are to use it.
