Keeping Your Hamster Entertained
Hamsters are busy industrious creatures and can become bored very easily if they are not provided with entertainment and distraction. This can lead to antisocial behaviour like gnawing bars on the cage for example.
The first thing you can do is to keep their food interesting. Try to vary it with different treats and fresh food. Hide it about the cage so they have to sniff it out and find it. Tie food to the top of the cage so they need to climb.
Think about the type of cage you put your hamster in. One with levels and tunnels is ideal to keep them entertained. You can get some cages that have add on rooms and sections for them to explore. Put interesting objects in the cage. A cheap idea is to put cardboard toilet rolls into the cage. Your hamster will happily gnaw away and use the cardboard to further fluff up his bedding.
Take your hamster out of the cage and play with them being sure to keep all routes of escape blocked. Hamsters love to explore their surroundings but keep an eye on him as he will love to chew on any cables or books for example!
