Keeping Your Dog Stress Free on Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is finally here and there’s no denying it most dogs hate the fire work season.  Some dogs like my mum’s basset hound will visibly quake in their doggy boots, whereas others will bark at them in an attempt to protect their owners from the noisy intrusion like my own shih tzu and then you’ll get the odd dog who’ll remain blissfully unaffected like my sister’s basset hound Harvey, who will happily sniff around the garden whilst the night sky is exploding with fireworks!

If your dog is adversely affected there are several things you can do.  Firstly, you’ll need to sacrifice going out to watch the celebrations yourself as your pooch will more than likely feel much more secure with you in the house.  Sit with your pet and put the TV on to drown out the noise.  If this doesn’t calm your dog then there are sedatives that can be provided by your vet which will desensitize your dog to the noises.  If you don’t like giving your dog sedatives then there are also CDs available that repute to soothe and calm your dog.  There are CDs available that have been specially devised for Bonfire Night and act as a relaxation CD.  It may be a case of trial and error but there should be something that will suit your pet.
