Keep Your Horses and Ponies Safe in Firework Season

Make sure you do not set off fireworks near livestock or horses in fields or anywhere housing horses nearby.  If you do plan a firework display in a rural area let the neighbouring farmers know in advance.

If you own your own horse try to ensure that no fireworks are set off nearby and inform your neighbours and local organisers of firework displays that you have horses in the area.  A responsible organiser will then ensure that fireworks are only let off in the opposite direction to your stables.

Keep your horse in its normal environment where it will feel safe and secure.  If you normally house your horse out in a field it is fine to continue to do so as long as it is safe and secure with no firework displays in the area.

If fireworks are due to be let off in the area make sure someone experienced stays with the horse.  This way you can keep the horse as calm as possible.  If the horse does react badly to loud noises have a chat with the vet or alternatively move the horse elsewhere for the night.

Keep calm yourself as horses are sensitive to moods and will pick up on you if you are tense or nervous.
