Is a fish right for you?
When choosing any pet you need to carefully consider whether it will fit in with your life and family. This is no different when choosing a fish. Fish are generally one of the easiest pets to care for as they don’t require training or visits to the vets however here are some things you should still consider:
Affordability - the initial financial outlay for setting up your fish tank can be expensive and take time and patience. Ongoing however the cost is minimal in comparison to other pets.
Other pets and family – the number one cause of ill health in fish is stress. This is caused by a multitude of things but the most common ones are tapping on the tank or other noises and disturbances. You’ll need to keep a watchful eye on young children and keep pets such as cats well away from the fish tank.
Commitment – you’ll need to spend at least 30 minutes a day caring for your fish. Fish are completely at your mercy to ensure that their environment is suitable therefore you need to ensure you can dedicate some time each day to care for them. Bear in mind that although some fish are shortlived others can live for several years.
Stability – the environment your fish live in needs to be stable to ensure happy, healthy fish. You’ll need to make sure you buy all the necessary equipment and choose the location of the tank carefully. The aquarium needs to be away from direct sunlight and out of drafts to keep the tank temperature stable. It also needs to be well away from the busy family environment to keep stress levels to a minimum.
