Housing Your Chinchilla
When setting up your chinchilla in its new home there are some consideration you need to make as they have some very specific requirements to feel fully at home.
To keep fit, happy and healthy your chinchilla needs a dry, clean, comfortable home. You need to ensure its cage is spacious and well ventilated. Make sure it is chew-proof and secure as chinchillas can escape easily if the cage can be easily damaged.
Select the bedding carefully. You should not use pine shavings, cedar shavings or sawdust as these can contain preservatives or oil that can irritate your chinchilla. Use only natural materials such as shredded paper or Aspen bedding.
You’ll need to include in the cage food and water bowls and toys. Make sure you include some toys that they can use to groom their teeth and something made from a natural material that they can chew on. There are also exercisers that you can buy that enable your chinchilla to burn off some energy.
Chinchilla love dust baths so make sure you include a container for this. Finally include treats and hay for nibbling. You chinchilla will be happy and content!
