Housing a Rabbit

If you have a pet rabbit and you want to keep it outside you need to provide it with a large abode
When choosing your hutch go armed with some key facts about your rabbit.  How big will it grow in adulthood?  As a guide your adult rabbit should be able to sit up fully stretched on its hind legs and be able to stretch out length ways.

You’ll need two sections to the hutch so that there is a safe, comfortable area for sleeping.  Make sure the doors are sturdy and they can be securely locked.

As the hutch will be out in all weathers you need it to be completely weatherproof.   Make sure the roof is on a slant so that rain runs off the hutch and away from the rabbit.  You’ll need a wire meshed front to the hutch.  Watch out for rough or sharp edges as the rabbit could injure itself.  To keep the rabbit warm and safe attach a piece of canvas across the roof and drop it down over the front of the hutch at night.
For flooring use a thick base of newspaper and sprinkle a layer of saw dust or wood shavings. The hutch should be lined using a thick layer of newspaper with wood shavings or sawdust on top for extra warmth.  Hay can be used to make the sleeping area cosy.

Give some thought to the location of the hutch.  It should be raised off the ground to prevent damp and to protect the hutch from small wild animals.  Rabbits are quite hardy and will survive in low temperatures but make sure the hutch is protected from draughts and beware of extremes of temperature.  In winter take the hutch in to a garage or shed and in summer keep away from direct sunlight,
