Have Dog, Will Travel

One of the main reasons I chose a Shih Tzu as my pet dog was his portability.  By that I mean he’s really easy to travel with and from an early age I got him used to traveling in the car not just locally but on long distances too.  Most dogs will love traveling with you in the car. After all it can only mean that you are both off on a adventure can’t it?  However if a dog doesn’t get used to traveling early enough he can become frightened of traveling or suffer from travel sickness.

Think about the reasons you normally take the dog in the car.  Is it mainly limited to trips to the vet?  If so your dog may associate car travel with nasty experiences and will automatically respond with anxiety.
To overcome this, start by taking your dog for a short drive.  Stop and take him for a walk before driving back.  Repeat this often.  Eventually your pet will start to replace his bad associations with the good association of going for a walk.

Another way is to firstly get your dog used to car when its stationary.  Use treats to entice him into the car and let him settle on one of his favourite doggie blankets.  Once he’s acclimatized to the car start the engine and let him get used to the sound before taking him on a short drive.

If your dog does get travel sick keep that car well aired.  If he starts feeling sick pull over and let him out for a while. Have water on hand particularly if you’re traveling far.
