Fancy Something Exotic

Posted by: John  :  Category: Unusual Pets

The idea of an exotic pet may be something that really appeals to you but you’ll need to take some time to consider whether that pet is really suitable for your lifestyle.  Many exotic pets are illegal in the UK because they pose potential threats to people or they are a protected species.  Here are some things to consider before you buy:

  • Does your pet require a lot of space or expensive equipment to provide it with the right climate for it to thrive?  If the animal needs a lot of exercise have you got time to commit to it?
  • Will you be able to handle the pet?  For example tarantulas will bite if they feel frightened and some reptiles are not great for handling as they have a protective slimy coat on their skin.
  • Does you local vet have experience of exotic pets?
  • Do you have kids?  Children and exotic pets are rarely a good combination.
  • Do you have other pets?  Research if the exotic pet is dangerous to your existing pets before you buy.
  • What are its dietary requirements?  You may need to feed them things such as live locusts or frozen mice!
  • Will you be able to get a willing pet sitter when you are away?  Not everyone will be happy to pet sit a tarantula for example.
  • How big is your pet likely to grow?  Pythons for example can grow up to 6 ft long!
  • Can you afford the pet?  Vet bills, food, equipment are all likely to be more expenive than more conventional pets.
  • Finally will they need company?  Some exotic pets need another in order to thrive.
