Entertaining a Chinchilla
Chinchillas are a great pet for older children and adults. They are low maintenance and are inquisitive and friendly creatures. With lots of patience and attention they can become very tame. They are naturally timid creatures and do not cope well with rough handling so they are not suitable for smaller children.
Chinchilla’s are sociable creatures and the best way you’ll find of keeping your pet happy and entertained is by getting it a playmate. Two chinchilla’s will keep each other company and prevent boredom setting in. You also need to give them toys and stimulate their species specific behaviour by hiding treats in their cage. This will keep them challenged and will also stimulate a natural feeling process.
You can also put branches and shelves into the cage which give your chinchilla exercise as it jumps around the cage. They also love to chew so make sure your provide plenty of wooden blocks and natural toys. Also allow your chinchilla plenty of playtime outside of the cage. However check the area for anything they could chew that would harm them. Chinchillas will chew anything so be sure to protect your belongings. One idea is to use a pet play pen. This allows you to keep an eye on them while they play.
