Emu Destined for Omlette Now Family Pet

After buying an emu egg as a novelty food item a woman living in Sussex surprisingly hatched an emu chick from it!

The chick, which Gillian Stone based in Bexhill, called Osborne, is being raised as a family pet.  When visiting the Isle of Wight Gillian found a farm that sold emu eggs.  She bought three of the large green eggs and stowed them in an incumbator which she kept in the kitchen.

Two of the eggs proved to be infertile but the third egg hatched after 52 days and little Osborne was born.

Gillian hand reared him and after nine days the unusual pet is growing strong and Gillian has plans to find him a mate.

“We decided to risk putting the eggs in the incubator and, after a little bit of help Osborne arrived.  He was destined to be an omelette but now he’s an emu.”

The baby emu will sprout to over 6ft in height and there are plans to move the emu out of Ms Osborne’s home into her smallholding close by.

Jenny Cosham, a friend of the family, said that this was just like Ms Stone.

“She turns up with all sorts of things.  We’ve had chicks, we’ve had lambs, we’ve had all sorts - there was even a duck in the shower once.”
