Dogs for Diabetics
The benefits that a pet can bring to its owner are well documented with animal therapy being a treatment in its own right for helping people recover from traumatic experiences, physical injury and behavioural issues. Dogs in particular play a massive role in our society supporting vulnerable people and giving them greater access to live their lives. The most archetypal image is the golden Labrador with its blind owner. These expertly trained animals give those people suffering from loss of sight the ability to leave the confines of their homes and get out and about.
A new study has just revealed that our canine friends have been proven to be able to detect drops in the blood sugar levels of people suffering from diabetes. Research is being carried out at the Queen’s University in Belfast into the anecdotal evidence that a dog’s acute sense of smell can be used to detect the onset of a hypoglycaemic attack. Since 2004 and organisation called Dogs for Diabetes has been putting this theory through its paces and has homed over 30 dogs in the homes of people suffering from type 1 diabetes (this is the insulin dependent type).
There are no scientific reasons that have been found to explain why dogs m ay be able to detect drops in blood sugar levels but yet again the dogs proves to be man’s best friend.
