Exercising Your Dog
If you are something of a couch potato then think again before choosing a dog as your pet. Dogs need exercise not just to maintain their physical health but to also maintain their psychological health too.
When you decide to buy a dog it goes without saying that you should research the breed extensively before you commit. Depending on the breed there will be different exercise requirements. A Yorkshire Terrier will be quick happy on a quick walk around the block twice a day whereas a Springer Spaniel will require much more exercise and entertainment.
You need to read up on why the dog was bred as this will affect the type of exercise they enjoy. A gun dog or hound for example will want to track and sniff for long distances as this was what they were bred to do whereas a Shih Tzu will be happy to walk anywhere with its owner as it is a companion dog.
Vary where you go with your dog and take toys such as a ball or Frisbee to entertain them. You’ll find with regular exercise your dog is happier and more content and less likely to display undesirable behaviour such as aggression or chewing.
