Dogs and Anxiety

My friend was telling me last week about her mum’s dog, Deefer, which had taken to chewing on its own hair and pulling out. This was due to her mum being suddenly rushed into hospital leaving not only an anxious and lost dog at home but an equally lost and confused husband!

Anxiety can take on many forms from self harm, to the destruction of household items such as furniture, carpets and even walls and skirting boards. When there is a change in routine in the household a dog has no way on knowing what has happened or why and when things are going to get back to normal if at all. They can’t tell us humans any other way that they are distressed.

If you believe in this kind of thing, you could always take your dog for a psychic reading. Some specialise in animals and claim they can tell you what your dog is thinking or feeling at any given time.

If you fancy a more practical method than a psychic reading then to try and minimise anxiety when a loved one goes away for a while try to ensure that the rest of the dog’s routine stays the same. Often when relatives are in hospital its easy to forget mealtimes and walks when you need to go back and to the hospital – but wherever possible try to maintain some semblance of normality. If like Deefer the loss of its owner proves too much and the dog has started to harm itself take it to the vets immediately. A vet can prescribe a pheromone plug-in which looks much like a plug-in air freshener. This emits a synthetic pheromone which replicates that of a mother dog. It calms the dog and eases any feelings of anxiety. Another good method is to buy some flower remedy which is specifically for anxious pets. This is a natural tonic which again helps the dog to relax.
