Dogs and Anal Glands
Before I had a dog I was blissfully unaware about dog’s anal glands however after my shih tzu’s arrival and a spate of dogsitting my sister’s basset hound I know about them all too well!
Anal glands are two glands positioned at 5.00pm and 7.00pm on either side of the opening to the rectum. They act as a kind of calling card to other dogs and it is these glands that dogs sniff when greeting each other. When a dog defecates then the anal gland is activated and your dogs distinctive scent is left also.
Normally there should be no problems with the gland however a dog can get an infection there. This has often been related to low quality dog feeds that use a high proportion of cereal in their composition. This creates soft stools that don’t press against the anal gland to release the liquid inside and can create a build up and then infection.
The main signs of anal gland infection are if you catch you dog dragging his behind along the ground, he keeps licking his behind or your dog’s stools have become sloppy or soft. If this is the case your vet will empty the gland and some dog groomers offer this service also. Some brave dog owners will perform the procedure themselves but I wouldn’t recommend it!
