Dental Care for Dogs

Just like we humans your dogs teeth need looking after to ensure that they remain strong and healthy.  Your dog’s adult teeth will start developing at around 3 months and you may find baby teeth scattered around the house in the first few months.  As baby teeth drop out then the adult teeth start to grown through.  As with babies, give your puppy a good supply of chew toys to help him teethe.

Dogs suffer from tooth decay if they are not properly cared for.  Brush your dogs teeth once or twice a week.  There are plenty of tasty toothpastes available from pet stores that can be used to clean the teeth.  As a tooth brush use an infant’s finger brush.  Its easier to get into the mouth and dogs are less likely to try and nibble on your  finger than a plastic brush.

Tartar build up can be prevented by giving your dog plenty of rawhide chews or pigs ears to chew on.  These are low in calories and effective at removing plaque and tartar.

You can get your dog’s teeth de-scaled at the vets but this will seriously dent your purse so avoid this by caring for your dogs teeth regularly.  If you notice any problems or your dog has stopped eating then get the vet to check his teeth out in case there is a problem.
