Dealing with Tummy Bugs in Dogs

Posted by: Francine  :  Category: Dogs

It’s a common occurrence with dogs to be afflicted with tummy bugs from time to time.  It’s an occupational hazard of being a dog – they love to lick, chew, eat and nibble on all kinds of things that look of interest to them and the consequences of some of more stomach curdling exploits can result in diarrhea.  There are many different causes of diarrhea some of which very serious, others no so.

So how do you deal with diarrhea in your pet dog?  You should be very well acquainted with your dog’s stools if you diligently pick them up as any responsible dog owner should.  You may already have a good idea why your dogs stomach is off – perhaps they have eaten something rich when they normally eat a bland, regulated diet or perhaps you came home to find a favourite toy torn to shreds.  Most causes of diarrhea are as a result of eating something that simply doesn’t agree with their digestive tract.  My shih tzu suddenly suffered a bout of diarrhea over summer.  I soon realised that my well-meaning neighbour were feeding him sausages and scones with butter as a treat!  The diarrhea was easily resolved by speaking to the neighbours and making sure he stuck to his normal diet.  If I’m unable to identify a source I’ll starve him for 24 hours to see if this settles his stomach and then put him on a bland diet of rice and tune or rice and chicken.  If after 48 hours there is still an issue then its time to get your dog to the vets!
