Dealing with a Cat Fight
If you have a couple of cats or have a cat that is getting into cat fights with neighbouring cats you may be wondering how you can deal with them when they happen. Cats fights can be quite ferocious so to save yourself some hefty vet bills here’s some tips on breaking them up:
Get your cat spayed or neutered. This really does help to stem cat aggression – but if you’re cat is territorial (like my own) he’ll still get into scuffles.
Limit the amount of cats you have. Cats are territorial and need their own space so having too many cats can lead to confrontations over hideaways and food.
Startle the cats into ceasing fighting by throwing a blanket over them.
Create a diversion by gently moving a chair in between the two fighting cats. This will again startle them into stopping. Once you’ve diverted them then gently guide each one to a separate room and close the door. Keep them isolated until they calm down.
Switch on the vacuum cleaner – this will stop them in their tracks!
Spraying the cats with water will not work! They will be far too engrossed in the fight and are unlikely to react. Also screaming and yelling will only fuel the fight!
