Chinchillas
Originally Chinchillas were found in the high mountainous regions of South America. To cope with the extreme weather conditions of their territory they evolved to produce their rich silky coat. In captivity they were initially bred for their fur but later become extremely popular as a pet.
Naturally inhabiting Peru they are still found in the wild in the south of this region. Their coat is the thickest coat of all mammals and unfortunately this made them highly prized by fur hunters to the point that they almost became extinct. These days Chinchillas are a protected species and continue to thrive. Although Chinchilla lovers will find this hard to swallow, that is largely due to the establishment of commercial fur farms in the region.
It is only recently that people have started to consider these creatures as pets. They are nocturnal animals becoming highly active at night although they can learn to become active in the day. Their coats are normally grey however you will find black or brown Chinchillas.
Essential items for your new Chinchillas are a cage, pellet food, wooden wood chippings for bedding, a nest box and hay, a hay rack, food dish, water bottle and cleaning brush, a chinchilla dust bath, cuttlefish, chinchilla sand and finally disinfectant.
