Check Out Rescue Homes Before You Buy a Pet

There are thousands of pets abandoned or given up every week.  There are still many irresponsible cat owners who don’t get their cat’s spayed or neutered and end up with kittens on their hands that they cannot re-home.  Smaller breeds of pets such as hamsters, gerbils and rabbits are also to be found at most rescue homes.

Although it may be tempting to get a new pet from a pet store or breeder, think twice before you do.  The levels of unwanted animals are very high across the UK.  Less the 50% of the dogs that are handed in to rescue centres are successfully reunited with their owners and ultimately if animals are unable to be re-homed they face a gloomy future.

If you are looking for a dog or cat and want a specific breed there are rescue centres dedicated to each individual breed across the UK.  You can find details easily by surfing the net.  You may have to wait for the animal to become available and you will need to ensure you find out as much as possible about their history but the rewards can be huge.

For other types pet or if you are happy with a mutt or moggie look round all your local rescue centres.  Kittens and puppies tend to be snapped up very quickly but spare a thought for older dogs and cats.  The same goes for smaller pets.

The rescue centre often asks for a donation to covers costs.  The animals can be spayed or neutered at the centre for a reduced fee.  Some centre will microchip and vaccinate the animal before you pick them up.
