Cat Meets Dog
When introducing a cat to a dog it can be quite a challenge. If your cat is an older cat they may be reluctant to accept a new family member. As cats are very territorial they can take longer than a dog to accept a new addition. However if you are introducing a kitten and a dog you will have an easier time. At this stage the cat hasn’t built up any of it natural fear of dogs and still views everything with hapless curiosity.
If you are bringing a cat to meet a dog that is already established in the home firstly take the dog for a long walk to tire him so he’s less excitable. For the first introduction keep your dog on a lead. This way you can control any excitable behaviour and if the dog shows any aggression quickly remove the cat from the situation.
Ignore an excitable behaviour expressed by the dog but give him plenty of praise when he is calm around the cat. To make the cat feel secure make sure that the cat has access to places that the dog cannot go. Baby gates are excellent for partitioning off areas.
Keep the dogs sleeping area separate from any prowling routes that the cat may have ad also keep the cats food out of reach of the dog.
