Bringing a Puppy Home
If you’re planning on adding a puppy to your household you’ll need to puppy proof your house in advance. Puppies are mischievous, curious creatures and will explore every inch of your home with their nose and mouth. Approach it in the same way you would if preparing for a toddler coming to stay and you won’t go far wrong. Anything at ground level you can pick up is going to end up straight in the puppy’s mouth. Particular favourites are shoes, papers and socks! On a serious note, watch out for electricity cables and wires. One nibble of a wire and you could have a dead puppy on your hands.
As distractions from your worldly goods make sure you have plenty of tantalizing toys and goodies to hand. Make sure they are interesting and puppy safe. Teething toys are great for strengthening teeth and is a great way of keeping your puppy out of mischief. It also has a therapeutic purpose as chewing alleviates stress and anxiety which your puppy could feel initially. Reward your puppy when he plays with his toys with healthy treats.
Think about restricting access to certain areas by using baby gates. These are better than closing doors as you puppy can still see you if you walk into another room thus reducing any anxiety.
Introduce him to your family and friends gradually over the first few weeks and take him to busy places to get him used to distraction and noise.
