Breeds of Parrot
There are many varieties of Parrot to choose from and below is a brief guide to some of the most common breeds.
Amazons
Amazons originate mainly from rainforests in South America. They are best known for their brilliant green colour. Differing species of Amazon sport differing front head colours such as Blue fronted, Double Yellow head and Orange winged. They have a strong personality and are not for amateurs. They respond well to training and often bond with one person.
African Grey
With basic grey colouring, the African Grey has a white face and red tail feathers. It is an accomplished mimicker and has a vast range of vocal skills. They can learn a wide vocabulary and whistle tunes. They are very demanding as they can get bored easily and require you to spend a lot of time with them and invest in toys to keep them entertained.
Eclectus
Originating from Australia this exquisite bird differs in plumage according to sex. Males are green with red feathers beneath the wings and females are resplendent in red and violet. They are remarkable in that they have feathers similar in texture to hair on their front, neck and head. Their beaks are smooth. If ridges should appear this indicates a nutritional deficiency. They should be handled often as babies otherwise they can become timid and unaffectionate.
Conures
There are a variety of species available. The most well known is the red masked conure. This conures is green with red marks on the body and face. The sun conure in contrast is predominantly yellow with a variety of colours on the tail and wings. The maroon bellied conure is the quieter one of the bunch, green with a maroon belly. They are fun loving birds that can be taught to speak a few words. Keep the parrot entertained with branches and wooden toys or else run the risk of them destroying your furniture or possessions.
Macaws
The macaws include the blue, gold, green winged and red shouldered macaw. These birds live long lives and are dangerous for children due to their strong beaks. They are intelligent and love doing trick but they are also noisy. You need to be a experienced parrot owner to tackle one.
Cockatoo
Cockatoos demand a vast amount of attention. They need strong discipline and training from an early age. Check with your neighbour before you get one as they are notoriously noisy. Again they bore easily and are prone to plucking their wings if they are not suitably entertained. You’ll need toys at all times.
