Beware of Faulty Toys
Whether you have a guinea pig, a cat or a dog, no matter what type of pet you have when buying toys you need to take care. Unlike children’s toys there are no safety restrictions or standards imposed on manufacturers of animal toys and your pet can be at risk if you don’t check out the toys before you buy.
My dog is a shih tzu, not are particularly heavy mouthed breed but I have watched him tear to pieces in a matter of minutes a new squeaky toy. Stuffing lying everywhere and plastic eyes, nose and squeaker strewn on the floor. If he swallowed any of these it could mean an expensive trip to the vets.
Make sure you supervise your pets at all times when they are playing with toys that can be destroyed in this way. Keep an eye out for any split linings or loose bits that your pets could chew on and swallow. Look for toys that are durable such as strong rubber toys or rope toys if it’s a dog. Where cats are concerned the toys are generally full of appendages such as tinkling bells and fluffy feathers. Make sure the cat only plays with these toys when you are around.
