Bathing Your Pet Dog

No matter whether your dog is long haired or short haired there will be times when you need to bath your dog. When choosing a breed research how much time you need to groom and care for your dog’s coat as some of the longer haired breeds will need considerable attention and you’ll also need to pay for their coats to be trimmed.

My dog Tashi is a Shih Tzu. One of the benefits to his breed is that they don’t shed hair but consequently I need to get him cut every six to eight weeks which on average costs around £25.00 per cut. As Tashi likes to ramble and is magnetically drawn to any puddle or patch of mud in the vacinity he often needs bathing in between cuts.

Tashi is very well-behaved when he has a bath as he’s been used to getting them from an early age (although I don’t think he particularly enjoys them!) and is also calm and still when I brush him. When Tashi is ready for a bath I make sure I have a couple of clean towels, some medicated shampoo, a wide toothed comb and a brush to hand. I can lift Tashi into the bath but if you have a larger breed an old tin bath is ideal to wash them in. Firstly wet the dog down and the lather up. Take twice as long to rinse as it did to soap him up and then repeat. I keep my handle gently on his upper back to stop him shaking himself off and then squeeze out the excess water gently along his legs and body. Then it’s a rub down with the towels, a quick comb through and a blast with the hair dryer so that he doesn’t catch a chill. Hey, presto! A sweet smelling pooch!
