Barking Mad
My dog Tashi, has a strong guarding instinct despite his cute and cuddly Shih Tzu appearance! He is constantly alert to any noises or sound of oncoming cars or people and will puff his little body up into a menacing stance huffing and grumbling before he erupts into a throaty warning bark. As much as I feel reassured that he would make any burglar think twice about breaking in when I’m away or at night, it can be a bit irritating when he persists.
Barking is a completely natural behaviour for a dog but you do have to keep it under control because it can be irritating not only for you but your neighbours. If your dog barks for attention ignore him or leave the room. You need to let him know that barking does not get results. It can also be a sign of boredom so ask yourself if your giving your pooch enough exercise. If your dog needs to be left alone for any length of time try putting the radio on as this can prevent barking.
If like Tashi, your dog likes to guard, you need to acknowledge that he has alerted you to a possible intruder and let him know that it’s OK. Your dog should be trained to stop barking once you have signaled to him you’re happy with the situation.
