Advent calendars for dogs are fast becoming a norm in my house. It takes Tashi, my shih tzu no time at all to cotton on that there is food to be had from that cardboard contraption up on the kitchen counter! The ritual in the morning after he has jumped around like a demented pogo stick for five minutes is to bead me intently until I remember that its advent calendar time.
If you are new to the concept, yes, along with all the other Christmas gifts and paraphernalia you can now get for your pets there are special doggie and cat advent calendars to be had. And yes, you’d be right, I am a marketer’s dream come true!
If you’re worried about the idea of giving your dog chocolate then rest assured! The chocolate is special dog chocolate. The type of chocolate that you and I will be tucking into over the Christmas period is a big no, no for our pets. It can cause a great deal of damage and is very dangerous, to the point of being labeled poisonous for your dog or cat.
Other foods you should not give to your pet over the Christmas period and indeed at any time are alcoholic beverages, macadamia nuts, grapes and raisins, garlic and onions and the humble mushroom. These are all toxic to your pet so stick to their pet food and any special pet treats.
